It is a reflection of genuine understanding. And the intellectual disposition that produces it has a name: epistemic humility.

What Epistemic Humility Actually Means
Epistemic humility is the recognition that your knowledge is limited, your beliefs may be wrong, and the evidence available to you is almost certainly incomplete. The word epistemic refers to epistemology, the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and limits of knowledge. Humility in this context is not about self-deprecation or low confidence. It is about calibration: having beliefs that are appropriately proportioned to the evidence and genuinely open to revision when that evidence changes.
It is worth distinguishing epistemic humility from two things it is often confused with. The first is uncertainty paralysis, the inability to commit to beliefs or make decisions because nothing can be known with perfect certainty. Epistemic humility does not require this. You can hold well-reasoned beliefs with appropriate confidence while remaining genuinely open to being wrong. The second is false balance, the reflexive habit of treating all positions as equally uncertain regardless of the evidence. Some questions have strong answers that are not genuinely in doubt. Epistemic humility means being appropriately confident about those and appropriately uncertain about the ones that are not.
The Dunning-Kruger Connection
Epistemic humility is, in part, the cognitive disposition that the Dunning-Kruger effect describes in its absence. Psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger documented the finding that people with limited knowledge in a domain tend to overestimate their competence, partly because they lack the knowledge required to recognize their own ignorance. As expertise develops, people gain a more accurate and typically more modest assessment of what they know and do not know. The most knowledgeable practitioners in most fields are often the most forthright about the limits of current understanding, not because they know less, but because they know enough to see how much remains genuinely uncertain.
The Historical Record Makes a Compelling Case
One of the strongest arguments for epistemic humility is simply the track record of human certainty. The history of medicine, science, economics, and philosophy is littered with positions that were held with great confidence and later shown to be substantially wrong. Bloodletting was standard medical practice for centuries. Newtonian mechanics was the settled description of physical reality until it was not. Economic models have been held with high confidence and produced famously poor predictions. This is not a critique of the people involved, many of whom were genuinely brilliant and reasoning carefully from available evidence. It is a systematic reminder that the current edge of knowledge has always been further from truth than its most confident proponents believed.
Why Epistemic Humility Is Rare
Understanding why this virtue is uncommon is as important as understanding what it is. The barriers are real, and most of them are social rather than intellectual.
Expressing uncertainty is frequently penalized in social and professional contexts. Leaders are expected to project confidence. Experts are expected to have answers. Commentators are expected to have opinions. Qualifying a statement with “I might be wrong about this” or “the evidence here is genuinely mixed” can be read as weakness, indecision, or insufficient preparation, even when it accurately reflects the state of available knowledge. The social incentives consistently push in the direction of performed certainty rather than honest calibration.
There is also a motivated component. Beliefs are not purely intellectual objects. They are often bound up with identity, tribal affiliation, and the social relationships that depend on shared commitments. Holding a belief with humility requires being genuinely open to evidence that your community, your professional training, or your previous public statements are wrong. That openness is socially costly in ways that resistance to revision is not.
What It Looks Like in Practice
Epistemic humility is not a single behavior. It is a cluster of habits that, practiced together, produce a more honest and ultimately more effective relationship with knowledge.
One of the most observable markers is the ability to say “I don’t know” without discomfort. Not performatively, as a way of deflecting questions, but genuinely, as an accurate description of your epistemic state. This requires distinguishing between questions you can answer, questions you could answer with more research, and questions that are genuinely open or contested. Most conversations conflate these categories, and separating them is a form of intellectual honesty that takes practice.
Another marker is genuine engagement with opposing views. Not the performance of engagement, in which you hear out a contrary position before explaining why you were right all along, but the kind that actually updates your beliefs when the contrary evidence is good. A third marker is proportionality in the confidence you express. This calibration is difficult to maintain and easy to fake, but over time it is one of the most reliable signals of genuine intellectual integrity.
The world has no shortage of confident voices. It has a genuine shortage of people whose confidence tracks the evidence closely enough to be worth trusting. That scarcity is exactly what makes epistemic humility valuable.
