Short answer: Yes, at least in the moment. Studies show that receiving a phone notification, even one you don’t look at or respond to, measurably disrupts performance on attention-demanding tasks. A related but more contested body of research suggests that simply having your phone nearby, powered off and untouched, can also drain some of your available mental capacity.
Notifications Disrupt Focus Even When You Don’t Touch Your Phone
The most direct evidence comes from a Florida State University study that tested what happens when people receive a call or text notification while focused on a demanding task, but are not allowed to interact with the phone at all. The researchers found that cell phone notifications alone significantly disrupted performance on an attention task, even when participants never touched the device, and that the size of the disruption was comparable to actually using the phone to talk or text. The researchers concluded that a notification is enough to trigger task-irrelevant thoughts, essentially a jolt of mind-wandering, and that this wandering is what erodes performance, not the physical act of picking up the phone.
This isn’t an isolated finding. A synthesis of experimental research on phone notifications, cited in later work on classroom and workplace attention, describes notifications as capable of impairing performance and increasing task-irrelevant thought whether or not a person actually acts on them, partly because personally relevant alerts are especially good at involuntarily capturing attention.
The More Contested Claim: “Brain Drain” From Mere Presence
A more provocative line of research goes further, arguing that a phone doesn’t need to buzz at all to cost you focus. In a widely cited 2017 study, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that people’s available cognitive capacity was reduced simply by having their smartphone within reach, even when it was turned off and face-down. A broader meta-analysis pooling multiple studies in this area found a real but modest effect concentrated mainly in working-memory tasks, rather than the large, sweeping impairment suggested by the original headlines. Why This Happens
Both lines of research point toward the same underlying mechanism: divided attention and task switching. Whether a phone actively interrupts you or simply exists as a possibility you have to suppress, your brain has to spend some of its limited attentional control resources managing that pull, resources that would otherwise go toward the task in front of you. This lines up with what’s known more broadly about task-switching costs: reorienting attention, even briefly or internally, isn’t free.
Practical Ways to Protect Your Attention
- Batch notifications instead of receiving them constantly. Research on notification timing has found that consolidating alerts into a few scheduled batches per day, rather than receiving them as they arrive, improved people’s subjective quality of attention.
- Put the phone out of reach for demanding work, not just face-down. Given the uncertainty around “mere presence” effects, this costs nothing and sidesteps the debate entirely.
- Turn off non-essential notifications by default. Since personally relevant alerts capture attention most strongly, trimming what actually reaches you reduces how often that pull happens.
- Treat silenced-but-visible as not the same as truly out of sight. A phone on the desk, even face-down, is still a decision your brain has to keep making not to check.
