Short answer: Yes, the popular version is a myth. It’s genuinely true that some specific brain functions are lateralized, meaning they rely more heavily on one hemisphere than the other. But the idea that whole people are “left-brained” (logical, analytical) or “right-brained” (creative, intuitive) as an overall personality type has been directly tested with brain imaging and found no support at all.
The Study That Put the Idea to a Real Test
In 2013, neuroscientists at the University of Utah set out to directly test the left-brain/right-brain personality hypothesis using resting-state brain imaging. Researchers analyzed scans from 1,011 people between ages 7 and 29, dividing each person’s brain into more than 7,000 distinct regions and measuring which connections were more strongly lateralized to the left or right hemisphere. If the popular idea were true, a person who showed strong left-hemisphere dominance in one part of the brain should also tend to show it elsewhere, producing an overall “more left-brained” or “more right-brained” profile.
That’s not what they found. The study concluded that lateralization of brain connections appears to be a local rather than global property of brain networks, finding no evidence for a whole-brain phenotype of greater “left-brained” or “right-brained” network strength across individuals. Certain aspects of visuospatial processing lean more on the right hemisphere. This is the kernel of real neuroscience that the popular myth grew out of and then badly oversimplified: true, narrow lateralization of specific functions got stretched into a much broader, unsupported claim about two competing “modes” of thinking, each dominating a different type of person.
The Utah researchers were explicit about this distinction. As one of them put it, it’s absolutely true that some brain functions occur more in one hemisphere or the other, but that’s a completely different claim from saying an individual person’s overall thinking style is driven by which side of their brain is “in charge.”
Why the Myth Has Stuck Around So Long
Part of the appeal is that it offers a simple, satisfying story for real differences between people, some people do lean more toward analytical thinking, others more toward creative or intuitive approaches, and mapping that onto “which half of your brain you use more” feels like a tidy biological explanation. But personality and cognitive style are the product of complex, distributed networks working together across both hemispheres, not a dominance battle between two separate operating systems. The myth also spread through decades of popular psychology books, corporate training programs, and online quizzes that treated the idea as settled fact long before anyone had the tools to actually test it with precision.
What to Take From This Instead
- Don’t use “I’m right-brained” or “I’m left-brained” as an explanation for your strengths or weaknesses. The best available brain-imaging evidence found no basis for this kind of whole-brain personality split.
- Do accept that specific functions are genuinely lateralized. Language and certain spatial skills really do lean on one hemisphere more than the other; that part of the underlying science is solid.
- Be skeptical of any brain-based personality or learning-style framework that promises a simple binary. This isn’t the only popular “neuroscience” claim that oversimplifies a real, narrow finding into a much broader unsupported one, similar territory to the debunked “learning styles” idea.
- Attribute differences in thinking style to something other than hemisphere dominance. Personality, training, interests, and countless small differences in how distributed brain networks develop are a much more accurate, if less tidy, explanation.
The brain really does divide some of its labor between hemispheres, but it doesn’t divide people into two types based on which side is running the show. That part, the popular part, is simply not what the data shows.
