Short answer: It depends on what kind of fidgeting you mean. Natural, self-generated movement, like tapping a foot or shifting in a chair, is associated with better sustained attention, particularly in people with ADHD. Deliberate fidget tools like spinners and cubes, on the other hand, have a much weaker track record and have repeatedly been found to distract rather than help, especially in classroom settings.
The Case for Natural Fidgeting
The strongest evidence for fidgeting as a genuine aid to concentration comes from research on adults and children with ADHD, where restless movement is a defining feature rather than an occasional habit. A study from UC Davis MIND Institute researcher Julie Schweitzer had participants wear movement-tracking devices on their wrist and ankle while completing an attention task, and found that intrinsic, naturally occurring fidgeting was correlated with improved attention, measured by more consistent response times on the task. A separate study using the same kind of movement-tracking approach in adults with ADHD reached a similar conclusion, finding more fidgeting during correct responses and proposing that the movement functions as a compensatory mechanism that helps sustain attention during demanding cognitive work. The idea that natural, unconscious fidgeting supports attention doesn’t automatically mean that handing someone a manufactured fidget toy will do the same thing, and the research on tools like fidget spinners and cubes has been notably unkind to that assumption. A systematic classroom study of young children with ADHD found that fidget spinners negatively affected attentional functioning, even when used alongside an otherwise evidence-based classroom intervention, and the researchers explicitly cautioned against recommending them. A separate multisite study of typically developing children found a similarly negative effect of fidget spinners on academic performance, regardless of how pronounced a child’s ADHD symptoms were.
Not every fidget tool fares equally badly. - Don’t suppress quiet, unconscious movement during focused work. Tapping a pen, bouncing a knee, or shifting position isn’t a sign you’re losing focus; for some people it may be part of what’s keeping them on task.
- Be skeptical of visually engaging fidget toys, especially spinners. If a “focus tool” draws the eyes, it’s competing with the task rather than supporting it.
- If you do use a fidget tool, keep it out of the visual field. A hand-held object you can’t see may avoid some of the distraction that visually captivating tools introduce.
- Pair movement with instruction, not just access. The studies that found benefits from structured fidget tools typically included clear rules for how and when to use them, not just unrestricted access.
