The Structural Changes Are Real and Fairly Well Replicated
The evidence for physical brain changes from bilingualism is comparatively solid. Studies using structural brain imaging have repeatedly found that people who speak more than one language show differences in both gray matter, the brain’s neuron-rich tissue, and white matter, the connective wiring between regions. A review of this literature found that bilingual groups consistently develop greater gray matter volume than monolinguals in regions including the anterior cingulate cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, and basal ganglia, areas central to language control and executive function, along with differences in white matter tracts that connect these regions more efficiently.
